Sometimes it's about finding the right piece. That's a difficult thing to do given the incredible amount of choice we have. More often than not the wrong selections are made in interiors and money is rarely the reason. Most people don't really know 1) what is available out there and 2) what that perfect piece looks like (trust me there is always a perfect piece). The secret is taking your time and considering options that you normally would not. Stepping out of your comfort zone will give you new options you never truly considered and will bring you closer to making that right choice. Don't worry, if you still don't know; call me! The crazy fabulous peacock is back; thank goodness! I can really use some fabulous right about now. Although most associate the peacock with folly and drama anything goes as far as interiors are concerned. Any space can benefit from peacock inspired acessories textiles and furnishings. If yours is a classical space and restraint is your thing, an antique peacock paper screen will add just the right touch of bold. On the other hand if you are wild and live in an eclectic environment, feel free to upholster your walls with some peacock inspired textile and throw in a rug while you are at it. whatever the case may be, the proud peacock inspires some serious decorating.

Here I am , back from my well deserved, wonderful Floridian holiday. Before you get crazy and think I went to Tampa, you should know I flew straight to South Beach and lounged at the Raleigh (http://www.raleighhotel.com),/

favorite poolside hangout ever for two weeks straight with a Mojito in one hand and a copy of Vanity fair in the other. Being completely free with nothing but time on my hands (awesome) allowed me to visit various spots I had been dying to visit.

First on my list was the Tides(http://www.tidessouthbeach.com/), it's been around since 2007 and although many attempts at a visit were made on my part they never really worked out. I remember blogging about it at some point, feeling that I had a pretty good grasp on the vibe and essence of the hotel, but I was not prepared for the experience at all.

Kelly Wearstler is a genius; she is a designer's designer. I see a lot of great things, but very few re-energize and inspire me. This hotel is exquisitely put together; this designer focuses on the details, the bigger picture is just a result of well contemplated fine points. The combination of materials and finishes as well as their application are flawless. The spaces are layered, rich and enveloping. It's hard to leave, much less enjoy your new destination. This hotel is tough to beat! I was all around impressed, but the washrooms (lobby) really did me in. Not only are the material selections mind blowing (exotic stones and wood veneers) but they are so perfectly combined. I love it when designers focus on detail; there is such beauty in natural materials and they can truly be taken to the next level when a designer integrates the very forgotten element of tradesman ship.

April is an exciting month here at Igloo! This month, we celebrate 5 years in the business and what better way than to grace the cover of a magazine? This month's Maison & Demeure.

This is a bedroom that both Anna and I are very proud of because it's a perfect example of how to properly use scale, pattern and colour. The pallet started off with a South Asian feel, but after much consideration, we took a drastic left turn and brought the room to all new heights. Here's how we did it...

A sisal area rug covers the Cumaru (Brazilian Teak) floors, and to top it all off...a zebra (no zebras were harmed in the making of this room!).

The black & white is a big part of detailing for me. "Every successful room should have a black and white pattern; Fornasetti is the perfect helper when it comes to the that."

Ocean-blue grass cloth wall covering behind the headboard, brings texture and delivers a dramatic, yet soothing colour.

A screen-like patterned wall covering on the ceiling...really? YES...or should I say 'ceiling covering'?

How could you not notice the yellow bed?...YES-it's big, yellow, and beautiful! But, don't worry, the bed matches the two yellow chesterfield sofas in the Living room...I know what you're thinking; and you're right-we are crazy! No one here is denying that! However-the end result speaks for itself :)

The mirror console and black high gloss Ghost chair is the perfect duo to glam up this bedroom...Igloo style! A black framed octagon shaped mirror gently rests up against the wall-no need to fix it to the wall. Don't forget the yellow drum-a perfect bed site table. A black metal, heart-shaped box of our favourite Fauchon chocolate hang out on the mirror console to sweeten up the deal.

Strong, confident and unapologetic. This room proudly stand up to say, "Here I am - love me or hate me!" We love it!!

Anna and I always say to each other "...every environment we create is a reflection of our clients...and of our passion".

I wouldn't usually say this, but I was wrong. I came across this boat light fixture about a year ago in a catalogue and thought...where the hell would this go? I answered myself by saying "in the garbage!" this is when I look back and apologize to the chandelier! Here is a clear case and point-everything has it's place-content is everything. This space actually looks good. If you removed this sail boat, the space would become very regular and not worth mentioning. Ahoy Matey!

Tony Duquette interior

Everyone knows I love Tony Duquette; how can I blog about risky with out mentioning fabulous enchanting, luxury enhancing, don't be afraid to get dramatic Tony Duquette (www.tonyduquette.com) ? Well I can't! That fantastic fuchsia room; I can only imagine how glamorous a person must feel having tea (I call it tea, o.k) in there. Here's the thing, it doesn't look very complicated (in terms of decor ) but it's been put together quite delicately. Clearly the strong colour palette dominates and sets the tone but it doesn't over power the room (creating a stuffy unbearable vibe). The space has been layered nicely creating a fun little rhythm that the eye can follow. I realize this isn't for everyone but you know what they say: try it and you might like it!

Classic Furniture Meets Contemporary Layout

Bedrooms-I came across this classic looking bedroom, married to a contemporary layout. Based on the windows, and positioning of the bed, we can assume that this room is inside a loft. I love how the bed is just far enough from the window; it gives the space ample breathing room, and provides for an interesting approach to a bedroom, that could have easily started off as an office or living room.

This is a prime example of creative thinking. Imagine what the floor plan & layout must have looked like. One must really understand three dimensional space to pull this off. In my opinion, it's all the rage!

What a fantastic monochromatic space.

Finally, two minutes to have a seat and put some semblance of a though together. In my quest to expose design lovers to daring spaces I have come across these lovely spaces that are clearly worth commenting on. The first: a kitchen, is very subdued and yet still quite risky. Notice the cabinets and walls are one. The space becomes quite strong and imposing because the main protagonist is this raw umber colour that communicates such a sophisticated vibe. The floor, although much louder, (surprisingly enough) becomes a secondary player . The table and chairs bring just the right amount of detail to this very gutsy scheme. I am not sure how many of you would agree to let a colour be the leading concept of your space. This interior designer (Courtnay Daniels Haden) truly nailed this space! For more on colour be sure to check in regularly with the Color Association of the United States (http://www.colorassociation.com/). Interestingly enough the second space (an office) also uses stripes; this time on the walls. Obviously they are much more prominent in this scheme. The designer's intention was to make them the focal element. The office is not very subtle and yet transmits a very organized feel due of course to the horizontal repetitive lines painted on the walls. Gutsy, wouldn'y you say?

As promised, more daring! This gorgeous powder room (ouvre de Miles Redd) in a New York city appartment is daring (to say the least) and yet quite sophisticated. This unusual wallpaper is by Scalamandre (http://www.scalamandre.com/) and is the one and only protagonist in this Oscar winning space. Again, how many of you would have dared? If this powder room doesn't make you want to touch up your lispstick, I don't know what to tell you.

Happy new year everyone, here's hoping 2010 will be a wonderful year in all things design. I chose this quote because it illustrates the direction I want to share with you all in these next couple of weeks.Let's have a look at the rooms that were a risky undertaking and are so undeniably successful we all wish we had the guts. There's no way around it people, if you want gorgeous: take the risk (of course what I mean by that is listen to your very qualified interior designer)! You will be amazed at how wonderful your new daring space will make you feel, it will inspire and re energize you. Better still, yours will be a unique space, reflecting your person and lifestyle. Kiss Me You Fool!

During the month of December, the city of Milan will light up thanks to a number of light installations realised by internationally renowned designers in prime locations around the city centre for the LED.

Developing an idea of staging intimate encounters in the public sphere, Paul Cocksedge Studio (he is a wonderful lighting designer in the UK that we met in Toronto a few years ago at the IIDEX) will create an installation that reinvents the ancient European tradition of kissing under a mistletoe and transforms it into an act of charity.

The installation KISS will consist of a huge led canopy hanging above a stage from the centre dome of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and a large mistletoe. When couples move up to the stage and allow their lips to meet, their kiss sparks a charge that instantly activates a light sequence in the led canopy, changing the colour in varying intensity, ultimately forming numbers in the sum of kisses given under the mistletoe. Please, try to hold back the tears!

Each time this occurs, in spirit of the Christmas season, the sponsor UBI Banca, will donate one Euro to CESVI, helping ease the hunger in North Uganda.

I think checkered floors are great. they are the ideal solution when you are looking to make a simple statement. Impact. Fearless. Confidence. Checkered floors have been around for centuries, and can be incorporated in many different interiors, all with the same intention. From classical interiors, to Rock and Roll, these patterns can be achieved using stone, linoleum, or even paint. They are all good-what makes them excellent is context.

I was so please to see the Platner chair used properly! I mean, it's a beautiful piece - and, it could go anywhere, even I'd say it can carry a space on it's own. However, Toronto firm Burdifilek had the guts to upholster with a brown/turquoise pattern...and it works. I must admit, this may not have been a combination I would have come up with myself, however I know this is something Anna would have brought forth in a brain storm. I have such appreciation for reinterpretation of modern classics only when it is done with dignity. W Atlanta is home to these beautiful customized Platner chairs. Be warned, don't try this at home; leave it to the professionals!

We are almost done with the ladies washroom here at Igloo world headquarters. I just can't get over how fabulous it looks. Of course we used Bardelli tiles (www.bardelli.it); we decided to work with the Cuban Black collection designed by none other than Ruben Toledo. Let's just get the nitty gritty out of the way: the quality of this product is unparalleled, the craftsmanship unrivaled. There, now we can get to the fun part. This collection was inspired by Ruben's native land: Cuba. As its name indicates it, this collection represents a Cuban Veranda in a beautiful poetic way. Ruben Toledo, one of my favorite designers was born in Havana, Cuba in 1961. He is designer extraordinaire!! A painter, sculptor, illustrator, fashion chronicler and critic, and surrealist. You name it, he has designed it or collaborated on it. There is no limit to this man's genius and creativity. Give us a call and stop by it's worth a peak, it truly is.

I had a chance to experience one of our own spaces this weekend. It was a great experience! This spa was designed over a year ago, and as always, I make a conscious effort to stop thinking about projects after they are done so that when I walk through them with a fresh pair of eyes. This is the only way of being able to asses ones work. When I arrived to the spa, I was welcomed by a fantasy like reception desk-we used a white 8x8 ceramic tile that looks like a tufted pillow. The contrast between visual and actual texture creates a lot of interest. Beyond that, there is the change rooms and relaxation area. I was happy to see how the owner Natalie grew into her space by adding her own 'Spa Calme' touches, such as relaxing music and special scents. Needless to say, the service was impeccable and the experience was grand. I left as a returning client and most of all a proud Interior Design Professional!

Fashion Designer Anna Sui remains very true to herself with this awesome apartment of hers. I can't help but be happy for people that remain true to their personal style and identity when designing and decorating their homes. I know that this seems like a "duh" kind of statement but you would be surprised at how many people don't trust their own instincts when it comes to their own spaces. Remember, you never want to feel like a stranger in your own home. you want to make sure that you respect both environment and personal vibe. Never try to re create, rather borrow and reinterpret. It really is the only way to feel connected to your home.

I almost choked on my sandwich when Anna showed me this fabric! I became crazy. Like all that is perfect, it can easily be adapted and applied to many different mediums ei; textiles, accessories, carpets, etc. This pattern called "Linien" is the proof. The strength is in its simplicity. One very basic element of design was used..."contrast in direction". My clients are always amuses when I say "It's so simple and yet, complicated." The possibilities with this pattern are endless. Also, it's been around for nearly 100 years. This textile now produced by Unika Vaev, is as valid today in the 21st century as is was the day it was created. I look forward to specifying this textile to a worthy project. It will truly be an honour!

I just got back from a much needed Las Vegas getaway, I drank by the pool side at the Trump; gambled at the Bellagio (can you say Muranno); tried to re-new my vows at the Graceland wedding chapel (never mind $800) and ate at the renowned Aureole restaurant. However the one thing I did not have the pleasure of visiting was the Barbie-themed suite at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas created by none other than Jonathan Adler. If you grew up with Barbie (as I have), can you imagine how fabulous this life size, pink-filled doll house must be?
From the wall decor to the furniture to the bathroom accessories Jonathan Adler has brought Barbie's world to life.

Broadway Boogie Woogie

This painting is awesome in person. I saw it at the MoMa a few years ago, and I think of it often. Mostly for it's complex composition, and use of colour. Balance is the prominent element of design here. I've included below a blurb explaining it's story...

Escaping to New York after the start of World War II, Mondrian delighted in the city's architecture, and, an adept dancer, was fascinated by American jazz, particularly boogie–woogie. He saw the syncopated beat, irreverent approach to melody, and improvisational aesthetic of boogie–woogie as akin to his own "destruction of natural appearance; and construction through continuous opposition of pure means—dynamic rhythm." Bands of stuttering chromatic pulses, paths of red, yellow, and blue interrupted by light gray suggest the city's grid and the movement of traffic, while the staccato vibration of colors evokes the syncopation of jazz and the blinking electric lights of Broadway.

Many architects and designers have been influenced by Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie. Below is Dutch artist Gerrit Thomas' famous chair. He's also known for having set the tone for movement of De Stijl. I think this chair is one of the very few pieces that have been influenced by Piet, that actually is successful.

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (25 June 1888–27 June, 1965) was a Dutch furniture designer and architect. One of the principal members of the Dutch artistic movement called De Stijl, Rietveld is famous for his Red and Blue Chair and for the Rietveld Schröder House, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rietveld designed his famous Red and Blue Chair in 1917. In 1918, he started his own furniture factory, and changed the chair's colors after becoming influenced by the 'De Stijl' movement, of which he became a member in 1919, the same year in which he became an architect. He designed his first building, the Rietveld Schröder House, in 1924, in close collaboration with the owner Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck. Built in Utrecht on the Prins Hendriklaan 50, the house has a conventional the ground floor, but is radical on the top floor, lacking fixed walls but instead relying on sliding walls to create and change living spaces. The design seems like a three-dimensional realisation of a Mondrian painting. The house is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Rietveld broke with the 'De Stijl' in 1928 and became associated with a more functionalist style of architecture known as either Nieuwe Zakelijkheid or Nieuwe Bouwen. The same year he joined the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne. He designed the "Zig-Zag" chair[1] in 1934 and started the design of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which was finished after his death. He built hundreds of homes, many of which in the city of Utrecht.

Less for me, but in the right setting, I could be wonderful. Please ask a professional if you are going to buy these, it may become a total disaster.

I just came back from Barcelona and headed for the Lladro showroom! After being allowed access into the shop, (yes, we had to be buzzed in!) I was in pure amazement. Not only was the interior lighting and detailing impeccable, but the product followed suit. I must admit, I was surprised to see so much zebrano wood veneer. I think I've seen too much of it over the past 4 years, and it's starting to loose it's charm. There are so many innovative materials on the market, there is no reason to dwell on zebrano. I really think zebrano is starting to have what I like to call "The lucky bamboo effect". But I digress...

I'm not that much into porcelain, but I have to say that a 24" Chinese dragon retailing for 18,000 euros, caught my attention. What I fell in love with is the beautiful and brilliant Equus Collection.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I were visiting the Telio showroom and we came across the new Jim Thompson collection inspired by Tony Duquette (http://www.jimthompson.com/). Now you all know how much I lovecraziness; none crazier than wonderful Tony Duquette (and I mean good Crazy) . This collection is so very well put together, that you just want to use it everywhere. It clearly embodies the Design Icon that was Duquette (http://www.tonyduquette.com/) and very much reflects that L.A feel that is so present in his work (as you all know Duquette worked for the the film industry in Los Angeles, and mainly with Vincent Minelli). The collection says extravagant and lavish yet tasteful. I can think of a million applications already!!!

We used La casa degli efebi in our office and I am still crazy every time I see it. A reaction which can only be elicited by truly great visionaries such as yours truly.

These gorgeous fixtures are available (I can't imagine for very long) at the Galerie van den akker in NYC. A Rare Pair of Wall Lights by Gio Ponti for ArredoluceItalycirca 1953. These wall lights and very well documented and were used by Ponti in several of his most famous commissions including Villa Planchart in Caracas. The Villa is a work of art in itself, but the thing that got me going this morning was the impact provided by these fixtures. What a legacy this man leaves behind.

A couple of days ago I read an article about Julian Schnabel's residential endeavor on the Western edge of Greenwich Village. I had heard about Palazzo Chupi and seen some images in the past, but I never really took the time to really look into it. Glad I did! It's great to see people being sensitive about their living environments, what's even better is how they translate this sensitivity, creating very cool and unique interiors .The most successful spaces (at least according to me) are often the ones that have personal significant touches, furniture or Art that is meaningful to those living in that space. Have a look at this very spectacular residence with Moorish, Turkish and Venetian touches reinterpreted "a la" Julian Schnabel.

How do you update a classic and still retain its essence? Just take a letter from Andrée Putman's reinterpretation of the famous New York Morgans hotel. This is her third go at it (she refreshed it once before in 1996) and what a go it is. This classy, delicate and knowledgeable designer has kept the hotel "the same" all the while making it relevant and fresh; and yes she has kept the checkerboard motif (remember the checkerboard stripes triming the doors of the city's old cabs that became a central element in the hotel's design).

Spazio Fornasetti Milano has moved! It is now located on Corso G. Matteoti 1/a. Alain and I just came back from the Milano Furniture fair, and on our last day in Milan were fortunate enough to visit the new space; we became Crazy with a capital C!!! Not that the old showroom wasn't fantastic, but the new one is just awesome, if you are in Milan by chance, you can't possibly miss it. It's actually a double treat because they are also holding an Installation and exhibition of Barnaba Fornasetti's new book: "Fornasetti: l'artista alchimista e la botega fantastica". Once again, we were Crazy! The great thing about Fornasetti is how tastefully everything is put toghether; the slightest details are always considered. Although most don't realize; It's always about the details.

Simple, yet worth talking about.

Can we be more selective? Just what kind of criteria must interiors respond to when considered for publications. If a space is published, does it mean it is good and tasteful? I can honestly tell you that I ask myself this question daily. The answer is unequivocally a big fa NO! Atrocious spaces make it into magazines daily and readers are constantly being bombarded with design mediocrity. Just what kind of responsibility are these magazines displaying? Really? The unfortunate result is an overall misrepresentation of good design; a dumbing down of the reader, if you will. Consumers of design publications should be wowed and impressed when going through a magazine; they should be exposed to interiors that apply the right design principles. I want to be clear here, this is not a matter of taste; it is clearly a matter of good or bad design and how much of it we are exposed to on a daily basis. It has gotten so bad that we can't even recognize good design when we do see it. I can't tell you how difficult this makes our job as interior designers. We must continuously explain to clients that their notions of good or aesthetically pleasing design are simply wrong (the great news is that most clients get it,and are glad when exposed to the right kind of material). Not to mention, it would be nice to peruse through a magazine (as a design professional) and learn something new, be exposed to something groundbreaking, or even feel somewhat enriched. This isn't so much about being critical or about complaining, it is about urging publications to seek out professionals with the right background and material that is worthy of publication. I wanted to include some terrible examples that I found quite recently but was persuaded to focus on the positive. Above are some images that were definetly worth publishing!

I have a certain number of Elle Decor Issues I keep handy, from time to time I go back to them for inspiration. Today I fell upon this one and decided to Blog about it. I can say a lot of things about this space, but will only say the few I feel are worth mentioning. This is clearly a space with a very distinct character, a space that changes and evolves with time, a space that makes no compromises. The thing is it doesn't have to, why not surround yourself with Art and objects that move you? Why not tailor your environment to your likes and needs? Ask yourself if you want your home to reflect the individual you are or some image you found in a magazine that seems to be "in" right now. I've said it before and I will say it again, let yourself go, you might like the result!

Designer and Artist Tony Duquette certainly lived his life on his own terms. The very wonderful legacy he leaves us with is the very relaxed attitude he had towards design, that truly made his approach quite sophisticated. The lesson here is obvious: surround yourself with objects that you love (regardless of their origin or price point). I know what you're thinking, and there is no right approach, just try different things, that very flexibility is what makes life interesting. Have a look at these spaces, they are so refreshing!

The interior of "Hamster House" circa 1980's (after the 1920's mobile home had been pulled out). The secretary desk is 18th century Venetian and the architecturally painted furniture on the left was originally made for Tony Duquette's dressing room at the old studio on Robertson Blvd.

Tony Duquette placed many pavilions throughout "The Empire". This one created out of an existing skeletal metal pipe structure purchased at the nearby Port Hueneme Navy surplus sales and covered with antlers from the Hearst ranch (Tony and Elizabeth were guests of the Hearst family at San Simeon for the last weekend before they gave the castle to the state). The pavilion is topped with a cast resin onion dome which had been thrown out at the back lot of MGM.

"The Tea House" which Duquette decorated with an antique Chinese silk temple rug on the floor, Asian antiques and a pagoda chandelier of his own invention. The ceiling was upholstered between the red lacquer beams with quilted bedspread fabrics which Duquette felt resembled inlaid tiles.

Tony Duquette decorated the covered porch at "Frogmore" using antique willow chairs upholstered in his own tiger printed corduroy and antique painted Austrian peasant furniture which he purchased in Salzburg in the 1950's when he was designing "Yederman" for the first post-war production of the Salzburg Festival. Note Duquette's cast resin lighted "Ghost Snail" sculpture and the carved Indian horses to which Duquette added the carved wings on their heads.

I was just browsing the March 09 Issue of Elle Decor (love this Magazine!) and I came across these two kitchens. How refreshing to see rooms that feel so personal and lived in, especially kitchens that of late feel so cold and laboratory like. I really enjoy the personal touches like the beautiful white Murano glass chandelier, and in both cases the lovely range of accessories. All these touches give these rooms that "labour of love" feel that truly makes spaces feel cozy and welcoming. Don' t you just want to have a cup of hot chocolate while you are reading your morning paper on a Saturday afternoon.

Factories are known for assembly lines, blue collar workers, and being dirty. But that has all changed for the Volkswagen Phaeton factory in Dresden Germany. The cost for the factory was $ 320 million US dollars with an addition $ 10.27 million invested in the campus. Located 100 meters from the city’s Botanical Gardens the factory has implement some interesting system to keep the traffic to a minimum. The only component of the Phaetons that is brought in by truck is the car’s body everything else is brought in by way of the city’s tram system.

The Phaeton is hand built and does not use a traditional assembly line. Unique to the factory is the moving hardwood floor which acts as an assembly line, where the cars move slowly through the factory to different stages of the cars production.

If you are looking for a tour there are daily guided and unguided tours of the factory, if you are looking to buy a Phaeton you are able to go to the factory and choose the colour and options for your new car.

Take a look at what will be the second-largest office building after the pentagon. It's the headquarters for China's central television and Rem Koolhaas has done it again. This beautiful Monster defies the typical outcome of large architectural projects, the bigger the building is, the harder it is to make wonderful. "It has a delicacy despite it's size" Koolhaas says. " It's something that's not really a tower, but three dimensional, so it defies urban space".

I came across something interesting today, it’s a Sony Bravia ad I’m not to sure how old it is but it’s quite interesting. This is part of a series of ads taking place around the world where Sony has come up with interesting ways to display colour. What is happening in this particular ad is an ariel show of paint. Something interesting for you, the Royal mint of the United Kingdom is modernizing its coin design. There was an open design competition which had 4000 entries, which was won by a London graphic designer Mathew Dent. His concept is one image which is separated into six coins, and requires them to be brought together in order to see the larger image, or just looking at the one pound piece would do the trick.

Alexander McQueen Store in Los Angeles by William Russel of Pentagram.

Located on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles it is the fourth Alexander McQueen store that William Russel has designed. It is the flagship McQueen store taking the same design language for the stores in London, Milan, and New York. The interior of the stores are inspired by McQueen’s catwalk shows, which uses the minimal amount of materials while presenting the collections. The store was created on a vacant site which allowed Russel to design both the exterior and interior.

The store also hosts a sculpture by Robert Bryce Muir titled “ Angel of the Americas” which is suspended through a skylight next to the entrance.

Blue Frog Mumbai Opened earlier this year the Blue Frog is a 1000 square meter complex which is comprised of a restaurant, club, lounge, sound stage, recording studio and sound lab. Zaha Hadid has created a dune inspired Opera house and cultural center for an island off Dubai. The Buildings will be located off the mainland of the Seven Pearls district of Dubai; it will include an Opera house, playhouse, art gallery, performing arts school and a hotel. The facilities will be state of the art in order to host world class exhibitions, with the opera house seating 2500 and the playhouse to seat 800. The art gallery is anticipated to be compatible to the size of the Guggenheim museum in New York, along with a 6 star hotel which will be connected to the mainland via a road. The two peaks indicate the location of the opera house and the playhouse. The auditoria are found in the flowing shapes that seem to rise for the underside from the main shell.

I found this new restaurant as I was flipping through a magazine last week. Ketchup-the restaurant, of course, is an all American adaptation of, well, Ketchup. Based on burgers and french fries, the concept is clear, good American food! I think this space is a success and worth talking about, the materials are appropriate, and the menu is honest, the perfect recipe for good design. My favorite feature? What is going on here? Craziness!!! Somebody take me to the Maldives, hurry!!! Rumored to be conceptual while under construction; Ithaa (means pearl) restaurant is quite real. Located in the Maldives (Hilton Maldives, Resort and Spa Rangali Islad), six meters out to sea and five meters bellow water via a spiral staircase, made out of curved transparent acrylic walls, Ithaa leaves nothing to the imagination (the underwater view is spectacular). This Gem of a restaurant is considered tiny by resort hotel standards (it seats 12) and it is priced at approximately $187 per person.

The Farnsworth House, built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1951 and located near Plano, Illinois, is one of the most famous examples of modernist domestic architecture and was considered unprecedented in its day.This house remains a monument to modernism, there isn't much to say, it speaks for itself, however I've got a few quick words. Modern does not mean beige! Modern does not equal trendy, this house is as relevant today as it was when it was built! Modern does not exclude pattern, notice the perfect balance between the starkness of the house and the nature that surrounds it. Modern is a beautiful and very sensitive aesthetic, that is butchered daily; in fact I can't think of a movement that is more misrepresented and misunderstood.

This project on the southwestern shore of a previously uninhabited island in the Turks and Caicos chain will cover 35 acres with a beachfront Mandarin Oriental hotel and residences. It will mark the first phase of development on the 560-acre island, with other projects planned for the future. Owners of the residences — 24 one- to four-bedroom units in the hotel building, 54 one- to three-bedroom units in nine other buildings nearby, and 17 free-standing villas with five to six bedrooms — will have the option of placing their properties in a revenue-sharing rental program. There will be 25 suites in the hotel to add to the residences offered for rental. We often look for items to accessorize our homes without really focusing on their process or intent. Often decorative objects seem empty and feel like clutter without adding to the feel of the home. A space should speak of its owner, should tell his story, and accessories are a great way to help get that story across. Truth be told, it’s quite hard to be discerning; although it’s such a design conscious world there is a whole lot of junk out there. That being said, every so often one comes across a great artist who produces beautiful things like Jeroen Bechtold (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Have a look at some examples of the really cool ceramics he produces (the Manhattan series are by far my favorite).

When I saw his work in Amsterdam a few years ago, I had to be sedated. I thought the stuff was out of this world! I kept trying to buy a few pieces but it was impossible (the shop was always closed), but that’s neither here nor there; perhaps you’ll have better luck buying online.
